Games of chance such as the ones we play in casinos or poker dens are some of the potentially most rewarding of pastimes. Opinions are divided, however, as to what really makes the gaming world go round. Is it sheer luck? Or do the hardened veterans who scoff at luck and swear by skills and strategy actually have a point? Are there different factors involved for a brick and mortar casino and an online casino?

Gambling has been around in some form or the other as far back as the dawn of civilization. In fact, you could say that any situation in which you put something (your life, your career, your comfort) at risk in order to be a part of something mysterious, where the outcome isn't yet known and is random, is gambling.
There's this school of thought that consider luck the main factor for achieving success at gambling. And while luck might seem to sound like that random run of good things happening to you, there's a school of thought that relates luck to more quantifiable - at least according to them-factors. That's where astrology comes into play.
Astrologers claim to have revealed, based on a 30-year study of gaming that there are planetary transit patterns - planet movements in simple English - on the days that you win and other lucky days which inadvertently affects your chances of winning.

The other school of thought is that luck is just a marginal factor in gambling and that it is mostly a matter of skill and probability. In fact, the very name 'game of chance' refers not to luck but to the probability (or chance) of a certain event happening out of a given number of probable outcomes.
For example, in a game of BlackJack a shuffled deck is not reinserted into the game once it has been played, bringing probability into play for the rest of the cards. Probability is not a guess; it is calculated from a list of possibilities. The object is to place your bet on the outcome that has the highest probability of happening i.e. closest to 1 and at the same time using an effective strategy with your bets to give yourself an advantage, and also to identify anomalies of chance and to take advantage of them to further your winnings.
Application to Online Gaming
Just as in brick and mortar gaming, online gaming - comprising online casino, online poker etc - has people divided on the importance of luck and science, respectively. Let's take the example of a game of online poker here, say Texas Hold'em. Luck - defined simply as what can't be controlled or freely predicted - dominates here, as players don't know which cards from the deck will be dealt. Once they're dealt their cards, they each know their own cards, and so can safely eliminate those two cards from the probable combinations their opponents might be holding. The flop, the turn and the river further reveal cards that the others are not holding, hence helping the players each formulate a strategy as per what they perceive the strength of their respective hands. So, as the game progresses, luck decreases in significance.
Conclusion
Gaming, whether online gaming or otherwise is the favorite recreational activity amongst many & being at ease while playing is the key to a winning casino and poker strategy. Using lucky charms and working out a strategy are just means to this very end, that is, if they do put you at ease! So kickback, relax and enjoy yourself!
